The German filmmaker of ‚The Forest for the Trees‘ and ‚Everyone Else‘ tells THR of her Palme d’Or contender, which she finished while having a second baby.

There are not enough women directing films. In Germany, we have this discussion now about a quota system as well, and I think we should try it, because concerning the public money, it should be equal. If someone told me in film school that it might be necessary to have a quota system, I would have thought he is crazy as there were almost half women, half men in the production as well as in the directing class. But I think it should be tried out and checked again after 10 years. And still I think the system has to be oriented on the actual amount of women handing in projects.

At Cannes festival panel, French Oscar winner discusses importance of turning down film roles and reflects on Scorsese’s ‘very feminine side’.

 

During a panel session at the Cannes film festival, the French Oscar winner recalled a conversation with Spielberg, a director she said she greatly admired, about why he rarely centers his films on female characters.

According to a recent study by the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School of Journalism, in the most popular films of 2007 to 2014, women had less than a third of speaking parts. A report from the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University, meanwhile, found that women directed just 7% of Hollywood’s top 250 films in 2014.

Maren Ade schafft es in den Cannes-Wettbewerb

Maren Ade („Alle Anderen“) hat es in die Riege der Auserwählten geschafft – ihre Tragikomödie „Toni Erdmann“ mit Peter Simonischek in der Titelrolle gehört zu den 20 Filmen, die im Wettbewerb der Filmfestspiele von Cannes zu sehen sein werden.

Das gab Thierry Frémaux, der künstlerische Leiter, auf einer Pressekonferenz am Mittag in Paris bekannt.
Der Wettbewerb von Cannes ist gewissermaßen die Meisterklasse des internationalen Kinos, und so finden sich neben Ade etliche der größten Filmemacher und Filmemacherinnen ihrer Generation wieder.

Wer hätte das gedacht? Noch im Februar bei der Berlinale veranstaltete der Verein ProQuote Regie eine Podiumsdiskussion zum Thema, ob eine Quote für Regisseurinnen Einfluss auf die Qualität der Filme habe. Den größten Lacher der Veranstaltung, womöglich sogar der ganzen Berlinale, erntete Jutta Brückner, als sie in ihrem Impulsreferat eine Zukunft ausmalte, in der eine deutsche Regisseurin im Wettbewerb von Cannes vertreten ist.

Die Diskussion um die Dominanz der weißen Männer in Hollywood brodelt schon länger. Nun haben zwei Datenanalysten des Projekts „Polygraph“ Zahlen zu 2000 Filmdrehbüchern vorgelegt, die die Diskussion um die Darstellung von Frauen auf der Leinwand neu befeuern dürfte. „Es gibt viel Gerede, aber keine Daten“, begründen die Autoren ihre Arbeit; sie sprechen von der „vermutlich bisher umfangreichsten Drehbuchanalyse“.

Die Ergebnisse: Schon in Filmen für die Jüngsten haben Frauen wenig zu sagen. In 22 von 30 untersuchten Disney-Filmen hatten Männer und männliche Figuren die meisten Sprechanteile. Bei „Dschungelbuch“ und „Toy Story“ sind das über 90 Prozent.

Das Missverhältnis gibt es sogar in Filmen, in denen eine Frau oder ein Mädchen die Protagonistin ist. (…)

Die „Polygraph“-Analyse ergibt außerdem: Quer durch alle Genres, egal ob Comedy oder Schnulze, sprechen Männer mehr. Je älter eine Schauspielerin wird, desto weiter schrumpft ihr Redebeitrag. Für männliche Schauspieler lässt sich dieser Zusammenhang nicht nachweisen. Nur bei 22 Prozent der untersuchten Filme gab es eine weibliche Hauptrolle, die tatsächlich auch am meisten sprach.
