CANNES — Confirming its status as a Palme d’Or frontrunner, 2016 Cannes sensation “Toni Erdmann” won the International Critics’ Prize Saturday for best picture in Cannes Competition. Plaudit was awarded by the International Federation of Film Critics (Fipresci).

A “stunningly singular” third feature from Germany’s Maren Ade, per Variety’s Guy Lodge, “Maren Ade” has been one of the best reviewed Cannes Competition movies in the last decade. Lodge, for example, called it a “unique study of an estranged but mutually depressive father and daughter” which is “a humane, hilarious triumph.” Last year’s Fipresci Competition winner, “Son of Saul,” went on to Oscar glory, snagging an Academy Award in the foreign language category. Sold by The Match Factory, “Toni Erdmann” is a Komplizen Film production in co-production with Coop99, KNM, Missing Link Films and SWR/WDR/ARTE. Sony Pictures Classics has acquired “Toni Erdmann” for North and Latin America.

Women In Motion in Cannes

Posted by on Mai 24, 2016 in ALLES, NEWS, PRESSESPIEGEL |

THE AIM OF THE ‘WOMEN IN MOTION’ PROGRAMME is to stimulate discussion and encourage reflection on the place of women in the film industry, both on and off the screen. Launched in May 2015 as part of the partnership between Kering and the Festival de Cannes, ‘Women in Motion’ is now an integral part of the Festival’s official programme. The programme features two fundamental components: the Talks, which are a series of open interviews with one or several guests, which take place throughout the duration of the Festival, to create a platform for considering and exchanging views on the multi-faceted issue of women in the film industry; and the ‘Women in Motion’ Awards, presented each year to an iconic figure and to one or several up-and-coming talents at the Festival de Cannes “Presidential Dinner”.

Cannes: ‚Toni Erdmann‘ Director Maren Ade Wants a Subsidy Quota for Women Filmmakers (Q&A)

The German filmmaker of ‚The Forest for the Trees‘ and ‚Everyone Else‘ tells THR of her Palme d’Or contender, which she finished while having a second baby.

There are not enough women directing films. In Germany, we have this discussion now about a quota system as well, and I think we should try it, because concerning the public money, it should be equal. If someone told me in film school that it might be necessary to have a quota system, I would have thought he is crazy as there were almost half women, half men in the production as well as in the directing class. But I think it should be tried out and checked again after 10 years. And still I think the system has to be oriented on the actual amount of women handing in projects.

Juliette Binoche: I confronted Spielberg and Scorsese over lack of female leads

At Cannes festival panel, French Oscar winner discusses importance of turning down film roles and reflects on Scorsese’s ‘very feminine side’.

During a panel session at the Cannes film festival, the French Oscar winner recalled a conversation with Spielberg, a director she said she greatly admired, about why he rarely centers his films on female characters.

According to a recent study by the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School of Journalism, in the most popular films of 2007 to 2014, women had less than a third of speaking parts. A report from the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University, meanwhile, found that women directed just 7% of Hollywood’s top 250 films in 2014.
